Tomorrow may be one of the most important days in the history of the United States. There are voters who have strong opinions and voters still deciding, but what most share in common is a desire for it to be over! But what comes next? Two people are vying for the highest position in our country and sadly what characterizes both is a shared mistrust by the people who are voting. How different it could be if tomorrow was “Truth Day” and everyone could know the reality beyond the rhetoric, and be free of distorted facts and deceptive words.
Many in this rapid-information age have grown tired of trying to sort through fact and fiction, but whatever we believe, or don’t believe, should come as a result of intelligent inquiry into real objective facts. That doesn’t negate faith, which all of us possess in a variety of ways and is a necessary part of life, but faith can and should be intelligent.
A few weeks ago I described myself as an unashamed follower of Jesus Christ. I believe in the accuracy and authority of the Bible, and if we had an hour together I would explain why. I admit that as a child I heard and received the gospel by faith, and was quite satisfied to trust in the One Who referred to Himself as “the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) In a sense, the day that I entered into a relationship with God through faith in Jesus was my decision day. I didn’t have all the answers, or even understand all the questions, but I knew God loved me and chose to save me from the consequences of my sins. John 3:16 is a verse familiar to most, but we often fail to quote the next two verses and don’t view it in the bigger context of all of chapter 3. Yes, God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal; but He also loves each of us enough to tell us the whole Truth and bring us to a point of decision: will you trust Him to be your Savior and Lord?
My election as a child of God was not because I was the perfect candidate for the position! He chose me right where I was, but loved me enough not to leave me there. He has given us the Bible—the True Word of God—so we can know Him rightly and live as His children according to the Truth we profess. More than ever, I want every day to be Truth Day. No, I still don’t have all the answers, and haven’t thought of all the questions, but I trust the One who does and has given us His Word.
Without a doubt the Bible is the most amazing book ever written and the scope and sufficiency of it is astounding! I am excited about the Bible and I want you to be too! Last week I introduced this blog as “The Story Behind the Story.” In the coming months I’ll give you a behind the scenes look, and explain how it points to the Greatest Story ever told. I’ve posted Part One on the website, so if you haven’t bought the book take a look and we’ll talk more next week. In the meantime, don’t delay decision day!
