Okay, I have to admit something: Before I wrote the Prologue for The Bridge from OneDayBow I had to read the definition to be sure I knew what one was! So why bother when most people don’t know what one is or why it is there? Good question.
In my case I knew something was needed to introduce some terms and background before getting into the meat of the story. While the Introduction gives important clues into the kind of story it is, the Prologue acts like a lead in for the story itself. I use it to speak directly to the reader to prepare you for what is ahead.
Here’s an example. Let’s say that you and I recently became friends and I invite you to Christmas dinner at my sister’s house. Once you get there you’ll find out that we are an outgoing and diverse group. If I’m any kind of friend I’ll warn you to expect a lot of noise, more food than a small army could ever eat, and a few unusual traditions. Why? Because you may want to pick up a set of earplugs, go without desserts for a week prior, and plan to lose a treasure or two in the ornament exchange. In short, I want you prepared for what you’re about to encounter and familiar with what is to come.
That’s what this Prologue is about. It lets you know that HereAndNow is a place, a bobble is a possession (and perhaps an obsession), and people are… people. Some things may sound familiar, while other things obscure, but ultimately—like my sister’s dinner party—you aren’t going to fully experience it until you step through the door. While I can’t take everyone to my sister’s house, the invitation to read the book is extended to all people of all ages.
But don’t feel bad if you read the Prologue and are stumped by the value of a bobble; wonder who or what a tempter is; aren’t sure of Here&Now’s location; and don’t know how you get to the Bridge. This is only the groundwork for Chapter 1 and beyond, but it is good preparation for what lies ahead. As a reminder, Part One of The Bridge from OneDayBow is posted on the website for those who haven’t bought the book yet.
I do want to give you one important clue, if you haven’t figured it out yet: OneDayBow rhymes with One Way Now. If you need another clue, try reading Isaiah 45 and Philippians 2 in the Bible. I’ll let you think on that for a while.
