Two days ago, we were blessed at Church by a beautiful children’s Christmas play. (Bravo to Roy, along with cast and crew!) It was a warm and funny and accurate account of what Christmas is really about – make that, Who the real Christmas is about. You can read about it in the books of Matthew and Luke, in the Bible (a.k.a. the Word of God) which gives the account of Jesus’ birth. In speaking about the Bible, one of the children in the play said, “It’s the roadmap to the Truth of Who Jesus is.” I like that, but I’d take it one step farther: The written Word reveals Jesus to us, Who is the Word incarnate – Divinity in bodily form, born to make God known! The Bible says it this way:
In the beginning
the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through Him,
and nothing was
created except through Him.
The Word gave life to everything that was
created,
and His life
brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness
can never extinguish it.
Jesus, as the Word, is the greatest and most perfect revelation of God. Hebrews 1 (New Testament of the Bible) states:
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom also He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful Word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So He became as much superior to the angels as the name He has inherited is superior to theirs.
Jesus was born as an infant in Bethlehem, died physically on a cross in Jerusalem, rose bodily from the dead after three days, and will return again to redeem His people and judge sin. And when He returns in victory, the name by which He is called is “THE WORD OF GOD.” (Revelation 19)
Let me end with some of the lyrics from Michael Card’s song, “The Final Word”:
And so the Father’s fondest thought became flesh and blood.
He spoke the living luminous word, at once His will was done.
And so the transformation that in man had been unheard,
Took place in God the Father as he spoke that final Word.
He spoke the incarnation, and then so was born a Son.
His final word was Jesus, He needed no other one.
Spoke flesh and blood so He could bleed and make a way Divine.
And so was born a baby who would die to make it mine.
