The book of Luke begins, “Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the Word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:1-4, NIV 1984)
These four verses are vitally important. They clearly convey that this book of Luke was not the result of speculations or fairy tales. It is a detailed account, originally written as a letter to someone named Theopolis, that is the product of careful investigation of events according to eyewitness accounts. Luke, like all the other Gospel writers, did not invent history but recorded it. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they were moved to pen the events of Jesus’ life factually and accurately. These four men were directed by God to write the “good news” of Jesus. Years later those manuscripts would become part of the New Testament of the Bible.
In looking at these four verses, there are two words that are important to consider. The word “fulfilled” in verse one ties their past to the present. The events that are recorded are more than on-the-spot reporting. They are intricately connected to, and validated by, the prophecies concerning the Messiah given centuries before the birth of Jesus. God wanted people to be certain of the identity of His Anointed One, whom He had promised to send. Which brings us to the second word of importance; “certainty” (verse 4). While faith is what earmarks follower of Jesus, it is not pie-in-the-sky blind trust, but is built on a sure foundation and will hold up to careful investigation.
In the long years of waiting for fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the Messiah, there must have been a lot of questions and confusion. Why was God taking so long? When would Messiah come? But behind the scenes the eternal God was patiently planning and preparing for the perfect time of Messiah’s arrival. God’s view point is eternal, and what may still be mysterious to us is completely known by God.
Throughout the centuries God has been faithful to preserve His Word. Even in the last 100 years ancient scrolls have been found that further prove the accuracy and integrity of the Bible we have today. Through this amazing Book we can see God’s faithfulness in bringing to fulfillment that which He foretold concerning His Messiah, and we can have confidence in the certainty of His promised return.
Even so, Come Lord Jesus!
